How To Make Your Yearbook Stand Out From The Crowd

WHAT IS A THEME?

Any good yearbook will have event pages, CCA photos and class sections. However a great yearbook will use one single element to tie all those sections together to tell a story. The element that’s used to hold all the different parts of your yearbook together is called the yearbook theme.

The theme can both be used verbally and visually throughout your yearbook, but will definitely be used to design the cover, title pages and divider pages.

HOW TO START?

Theme inspiration can come from all around you. So gather your yearbook committee for a brainstorming session and try to come up with some related themes. Some schools use their logo colours, school name or acronym, think even further outside the box and brainstorm other conceptual themes. Here are some tips:

  • Use colour and fonts to help with your theme.
  • Inspiration from things you love, but don’t copy plagiarize
  • School anniversaries, events or the year as theme inspiration.
  • Don’t limit yourself in with a theme that’s too specific.
  • Consider going abstract through shapes or design elements like circles or paintbrush strokes.
